Doctors and staff are missing – start of vaccination against Covid-19 in Italy is slow – today – 20-1

The vaccination campaign against the corona virus started just under a week ago in Italy. So far, the balance has been poor. Of the 470,000 available vaccine doses, around ten percent have so far been used. The authorities are nevertheless optimistic. Almost a week after the symbolic start of the corona vaccinations, Italy officially injected only about 46,000 doses into people. The Ministry of Health in Rome named this number in its online statistics at noon. According to the authorities, the Mediterranean country, which has so far registered around 75,000 Covid victims, has had almost 470,000 doses of the vaccine from Pfizer and Biontech since the end of the year. After the start of the immunization campaign on Sunday a week ago, mass vaccinations have been running since December 31. However, several newspapers reported difficulties getting started. As “La Repubblica” wrote, there was a lack of vaccinators and hospital staff around the turn of the year. Many duty rosters were planned for “routine days” and not for a major campaign.

“Like a protective armor” Europe starts vaccination marathon

In the country with a population of 60 million, it is particularly the medical staff themselves that should have their say at the beginning of the campaign. The newspaper quoted Vice Minister of Health Pierpaolo Sileri as saying that significantly more doses had been injected in Germany. But he does not want to speak of a delay yet. Sileri hoped that by January 6, all 469,950 doses of the first weekly schedule could be injected. It is noticeable that there are large differences in the vaccination rates between the regions: the rich Lombardy in the north of the country, where the corona pandemic has hit particularly hard, is well below the overall average. Around 80,000 cans had arrived there. By Saturday shortly before 2 p.m., according to the statistics, only around 2170 (2.7 percent) had been injected.

Winter sports season starts in mid-January

Meanwhile, Italy’s winter sports areas are allowed to reopen their ski lifts to recreational athletes from January 18th. Health Minister Roberto Speranza issued a corresponding order in Rome. Originally, the restart of the winter sports season was planned for after the first week of January. However, many affected regions and provinces had asked for a postponement. They would need more time to adjust the health rules in pandemic times. It is about how fully the lifts and gondolas can be occupied in order to ensure safety from contamination.

The government in Rome had stopped the start of the season because of the second Corona wave in 2020. Winter sports tourism is a billion dollar business in the Alpine country. Affected companies and associations had designated January 18th as the “last possible point in time”.
