The US epidemiologist Fauci has a guess as to what could be the cause. Just a few days after his infection with the corona virus became known, US President Donald Trump appears to be rising from the ashes like Phoenix. His doctors had reported a fever and a drop in blood oxygen saturation a few hours after Trump’s positive corona test – the 74-year-old was then transported by helicopter to Walter Reed Hospital in Washington on Friday. But on Monday evening Trump left the military hospital again – shortly afterwards, to climb the stairs to the balcony on the south side of the White House and salute the pilot of his departing helicopter.

Since then, experts and commentators around the world have been puzzling over the US president’s apparently quick recovery. But the renowned US epidemiologist Anthony Fauci was less surprised in a television interview. The president was given all substances that have a proven effect against Sars-CoV-2. According to Fauci, a still experimental antibody agent could have decisively improved Trump’s health. Trump was treated with an eight-gram dose of the antibody cocktail REGN-COV2 from the US company Regeneron on Friday before he left for the clinic. “I have a strong suspicion that was what helped him,” said Fauci on the CNN news channel. President Trump received the drug as part of a “compassionate use” – a treatment option that enables the use of an unapproved drug. The agent, consisting of two monoclonal antibodies, was provided by the biotech company Regeneron at the request of the presidential doctors. “I think the monoclonal antibodies made a difference,” said Fauci.

Coronavirus is blocked

Antibodies are important components of the human immune system and are produced by so-called B cells – basically, they are just small protein molecules that adhere to invaders such as viruses and bacteria. On the one hand, they mark them for the immune system and, on the other hand, they prevent the pathogen from entering human cells. In the case of REGN-COV2, the antibodies adhere to a crucial point on the spike protein of the coronavirus and thus prevent it from docking on the loca of human cells, the so-called ACE2 receptor.

One of the two antibodies in the cocktail comes from a person who had survived a Sars-CoV-2 infection. A B-cell of his immune system was taken from him and their antibody genes were cloned – hence the name monoclonal antibodies. They all come from a single (Greek monos: “only” or “one”) line of B cells. The other monoclonal antibody in the Regeneron cocktail is from a mouse. The antibody drug REGN-COV2 is currently being tested on humans in a clinical study following successful animal experiments. Just last week, the manufacturer Regeneron published an interim result: The treatment of infected people had significantly reduced the viral load in the throat. The symptoms also subsided more quickly. The 275 test participants, some of whom received a placebo, all had either no or only moderate Covid-19 symptoms – so possibly similar to the state of US President Trump last Friday. In addition to Regeneron, numerous other companies are researching antibody agents against Covid-19. In mid-September, another US company, Eli Lilly, had published similarly positive results from a clinical study with a single monoclonal antibody. However, the clinical studies have not yet been completed in both cases. In Germany, too, research is being carried out on monoclonal antibodies against Sars-CoV-2: Researchers from Braunschweig, Erlangen and Cologne are well advanced.
