In Latin America, despite months of quarantine, many countries have not yet reached the peak of the pandemic. Regional characteristics explain this: More than half of the employees in Latin America work in the informal sector. They are domestic workers or street vendors. Curfews are not an option for them. You have to leave home to make money. Many people live in confined areas in the slums of metropolitan areas, which promotes the spread of the virus. These five Latin American countries have the highest number of fatalities – fatalities (7-day moving average), five Central and South American countries with the highest number of deaths.

The spread of the coronavirus in Mexico, Peru, Chile, Argentina and Ecuador has long received little international attention.

Argentina imposed curfews in mid-March, which slowed the spread of the virus. The number of infections rose again in the autumn. Nevertheless, since the end of October Argentina has allowed international flights for the first time since April and opens the borders with Brazil. After the USA and India, Brazil is the country with the third most infected people and has the second most corona deaths (as of December 9). Brazil is testing little, which is why a higher number of unreported cases can be assumed. Indigenous peoples are particularly affected by infections. Despite the high number of infections, the borders are open again for air travelers from abroad, entry by land is restricted. However, larger events such as the New Year’s Eve party at Copacabana and the Carnival in Rio have been canceled. In addition to the countries with dramatic developments, there is a country in Latin America that has survived the pandemic surprisingly well: Uruguay. President Luis Lacalle Pou reiterated on October 29 that the borders would remain closed. It is the first time that tourists and guests are not allowed to enter the country.
