Worry about corona mutations – Covid-19 vaccines no longer work – today

Human-animal transmission Coronavirus mutation: does the vaccine no longer help? What happened on a mink farm in Denmark was what scientists feared at the beginning of the corona pandemic: the novel corona virus has mutated. It is now to be feared that the vaccines developed so far against infections with the virus mutations will not work.

New coronavirus variant on Danish mink farms

What happened on mink farms in Denmark was what scientists feared at the beginning of the corona crisis: the coronavirus has mutated. Cases from the Netherlands had already shown in the spring that rodents can easily become infected with the coronavirus and transmit it not only to conspecifics but also to humans.

At least 214 people infected with Cluster 5 virus

In Denmark, at least 214 people are said to have been infected with the new variant of the coronavirus, the so-called cluster 5 virus. 200 of them in North Jutland, where there are a particularly large number of mink breeding facilities.

Killing of up to 17 million mink in Denmark

In order to avoid more cases, the Danish government ordered the killing of all mink in the country on Wednesday. A total of 15 to 17 million animals that live on more than 1,100 mink farms must die.

Partial lockdown in some regions of North Jutland

In seven regions in North Jutland, people are now encouraged to stay in their communities. Local public transport is to be discontinued from Monday, restaurants, swimming pools and gyms have to close. Hjørring, Frederikshavn, Brønderslev, Jammerbugt, Thisted, Vesthimmerland and Læsø are affected by the restrictions.

Do corona vaccines work against cluster 5 virus?

According to previous knowledge, the novel cluster 5 virus is no more dangerous than the coronavirus. However, there is a risk that the vaccines currently being developed against the coronavirus will not be effective if mutated. The reason for this is that the mutation in the virus appears to affect what is known as the spike protein. The virus penetrates human cells through these proteins and multiplies there. The immune system produces antibodies that block the spike protein and thereby render it harmless. If the proteins of the virus change due to mutations, the antibodies are no longer a perfect fit and are therefore probably less effective.

While production is running, it is only possible to see the vaccine bottling from behind the glass. Employees prepare the line for filling the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine candidate. It is now questionable whether the vaccines currently being developed against the coronavirus also help with virus mutations.

Mink farms banned in Germany

The appearance of the new coronavirus variant on Danish mink farms initially has no consequences for combating the corona pandemic in Germany. In Germany, keeping mink as fur animals is prohibited, which is why there have been no mink farms since 2019.
