The World Health Organization (WHO) warns of negative side effects of nationwide lockdowns in the fight against the corona pandemic. Strict restrictions could help to break the chain of infection and contribute to the recovery of the health system, explains the organization’s European director, Hans Kluge. However, this has its price: With strict lockdown measures, an increase in mental illness and domestic violence can be expected. Kluge also points to the economic damage caused by strict restrictions. “Given these realities, we see national lockdowns as the last resort because they circumvent the continued possibility of getting everyone involved in basic and effective action.”
