UN report – Climate change is the main cause of natural disasters

Sergij
According to a UN report, climate change is primarily responsible for the fact that the number of natural disasters has doubled since the year 2000. By 2019, a total of 7,348 major disasters had been registered worldwide, almost twice as many as between 1980 and 1999, said the UN Bureau for the Reduction of Risks from Disasters. In these disasters, 1.23 million people were killed. The economic damage caused by the disasters therefore amounted to 254 trillion euros. Asia was hit by natural disasters a good 3,000 times, the American continent almost 1,800 times and Africa a good 1,000 times. There were more earthquakes and tsunamis and, above all, more climate-related natural disasters: Their number rose from a good 3,600 to a good 6,600. These include floods, storms, droughts, forest fires and heat waves. The number of events caused by extreme temperatures has increased dramatically, it said.
