Austria has been in the second lockdown of the corona pandemic since midnight. In response to the dramatic increase in the number of infections and the high burdens on the health system, citizens have to restrict their lives much more than is currently the case in Germany. Austria is now back in corona lockdown for around three weeks. Strict exit restrictions have been in place in the country of nine million people since midnight. As at the beginning of the pandemic in spring, leaving the house and apartment is only allowed for specific reasons – such as shopping, visiting the doctor or even going for a walk or jogging. Almost all shops are closed. Only shops for daily needs such as supermarkets, drugstores, pharmacies and banks are open. Schools are moving to distance learning.

The restrictions are due to end on St. Nicholas’ Day, December 6th. The move is a reaction to the recent dramatic increase in the number of infections. The number of Covid sufferers who have to be treated in hospitals and intensive care units in Austria has also increased significantly. Health Minister Rudolf Anschober expects that in the week between November 20 and 27, the utilization of the clinics will reach a peak. The Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz made it clear that mass tests should play a special role in the future in order to shed light on the infection process. The aim is to find infected people as quickly as possible and send them to quarantine. According to Anschober, such mass tests should not only be carried out for certain professional groups. They could also be organized at regional level.

The hard lockdown was preceded by a so-called partial lockdown. On November 3rd, Austria closed tourism and gastronomy, cultural establishments and leisure facilities. Exit restrictions from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. should act as a de facto ban on visitors in order to prevent infection during private encounters.

At the weekend and on Monday, the number of new infections every day fell. At the start of the week, 4657 newly infected people were counted within one day – about half as many as on Friday. However, the numbers are less informative around the weekend, as a number of cases are reported later. The number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants tended to be around 550 within seven days, several times higher than the German figure. Since the beginning of the pandemic, more than 200,000 people in Austria have been infected with the virus. More than 1,800 have died in connection with the corona virus.
