Screws on I-70 near Lookout Mountain flatten dozens of tires Monday

Washington

At least 36 vehicles, and perturbed drivers, experienced a flat tire or tires Monday afternoon when a box of screws spilled onto Interstate 70 near Lookout Mountain.

The incident unfolded at about 3:40 p.m. in the westbound lanes of I-70 and disabled vehicles were pulled off to the shoulder of the highway from Lookout Mountain to Evergreen, said Trooper Josh Lewis, a Colorado State Patrol spokesman.

“We had some screws in the road and a whole bunch of tires popped,” Lewis said. There were no crashes or injuries involved in the incident. Some vehicles had multiple flats.

Lewis said investigators suspect the incident was not deliberate and the screws unknowingly spilled from the vehicle of an unaware driver.

State troopers, Colorado Department of Transportation staff and roadside assistance personnel responded Monday afternoon, checking on drivers and helping to change flat tires, Lewis said.

Investigators would like to talk with the person who dropped the screws. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to the CSP at 303-239-4501.
