The Rockies shipped Nolan Arenado to St. Louis in addition to cash considerations, reportedly around $50 million. Here’s a look at what the Rockies got in return.

LHP Austin Gomber: The only player with big-league experience on Colorado’s end of the swap, the 27-year-old is a former fourth-round draft pick in 2016 out of Florida Atlantic University. He made his major league debut in June 2018 and posted a 4.44 ERA in 29 games (11 starts) that year. After spending all of 2019 in the minors, Gomber made it back to the majors in 2020, when the southpaw had a 1.86 ERA in 14 games (four starts). He was expected to challenge for a spot in St. Louis’ starting rotation in 2021, and that will now figure to be the case in Colorado’s rotation, which currently has a fifth spot up in the air behind German Marquez, Kyle Freeland, Jon Gray and Antonio Senzatela.

INF Elehuris Montero: Like the other four prospects coming to Colorado, Montero didn’t play last summer as the minor league season was canceled. In 59 games in Double-A in 2019, the Cardinals’ No. 8 prospect struggled, slashing .188/.235/.317 with 74 strikeouts. The 22-year-old is a .269 career hitter in the minors after originally being signed by the Cardinals as an international free-agent out of the Dominican Republic in 2014.

RHP Tony Locey: The 22-year-old third-round draft pick out of Georgia in 2019 was 1-2 with a 5.29 ERA in 12 appearances between the rookie level and Class-A in 2019. Most of his struggles came in Class A, where he had a 6.00 ERA in 10 appearances. He was St. Louis’ No. 19-rated prospect as ranked by MLB Pipeline.

INF Mateo Gil: The son of eight-year MLB veteran Benji Gil, the younger Gil, 20, was a third-round pick by the Cardinals in 2018 out of Timber Creek High School in Texas. In 2019, he slashed .270/.324/.431 at the rookie level, and also played a couple games in Class A. The Cardinals’ No. 22-ranked prospect is primarily a shortstop, and has spent the past two offseasons playing in the Mexican Pacific Winter League.

RHP Jake Sommers: A 10th-round pick in 2019 out of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the right-hander went 2-3 with a 4.18 ERA across 10 starts and two relief appearances in his first season of rookie ball. He recorded 55 strikeouts to 19 walks, and the 22-year-old was not ranked on St. Louis’ top prospect list.
