Ravens WR Marquise “Hollywood” Brown redeems his drops with diving touchdown catch against Broncos

After dropping three passes in the Ravens’ Week 3 win over the Detroit Lions and being on the wrong end of jokes on social media, Ravens wide receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown wasn’t down on himself.

Brown knows the importance of leaving the past behind, and he did so in the Ravens’ 23-7 victory over the Denver Broncos on Sunday. Brown finished the game with 91 receiving yards and a spectacular diving touchdown on four receptions.

“I always got trust in [Brown],” Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson said. “Things happen in games. When your brothers are down, other guys are supposed to step up. This week, he stepped up for us. We just play ball and keep it going.”

With the game tied at 7 midway through the second quarter, Jackson launched the ball 49 yards down the field. Brown sped past the entire Denver secondary before laying out in the end zone to make the touchdown grab and give the Ravens a 14-7 advantage.

According to the NFL’s Next Gen Stats, Jackson’s deep shot traveled 60.8 yards in the air, the longest completion of his career and the second longest by any quarterback this season.

“I knew I was lined up on [Pro Bowl safety Justin Simmons] and I knew he was a great player,” Brown said. “So I got up on him. I was able to flip his hips, and made a play.”

Later in the second quarter, Brown made another big play. With 3:59 left in the half and the Ravens pinned at their 11-yard line, Jackson pump faked before throwing a pass down the middle to Brown for a 32-yard reception.

“It just shows you who he is,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said of Brown. “I expect a lot more of that in the future.”

Brown knew his performance last week was unacceptable, as he has spent many hours working on those catches. “I’ve been working too hard on my route-running and separation to drop the ball when I’m open,” Brown said earlier in the week. “It could be anything. It could be not looking the ball all the way in. It could be a number of things, but the fact of the matter is, it just can’t happen.”

There was no added pressure on Brown to prove the doubters wrong. In fact, where some athletes turn away from social media, Brown enjoys getting a good laugh from it.

“It’s funny; in this day and age, it’s how you look at it,” Brown said. “I look at it the same way: If I’m on the outside, and I’ve got this dude in a fantasy, [and] he’s out here … I’m going to laugh with him. It’s just all fun and games. I don’t look at social media too seriously.”

Brown was all smiles after the game because he knew the same people who were criticizing his poor performance last week were likely praising him for his performance Sunday afternoon.

“If you do good, the same people who talk negatively will talk good, so why would you take it too seriously?” Brown said.
