A new police dog in Nebraska is named after a Colorado State Patrol Master Trooper who died in the line of duty on Interstate 70 near Deer Trail.

Mo, the newest canine of the Bellevue Police Department, is named after William Modén, who died on June 14, 2019, while responding to a rollover crash, when he was hit by a Ford F-250 pickup truck. Modén was 37 at the time of his death.

Mo, a Goldendoodle puppy, will eventually become a certified therapy dog, the police department announced on Monday. He’ll be “used to offer emotional support to officers and citizens during traumatic events,” among other duties.

Bellevue is a city of about 53,000 residents south of Omaha. When not on duty, Mo will live on a farm with a family, two other dogs and other animals, including horses, chickens and barn cats.

Modén was a 12-year veteran of the Colorado State Patrol. At his funeral, he was posthumously promoted to the rank of master trooper. State patrol barracks across Colorado welcomed Mo to the force through Twitter on Tuesday and Wednesday.
