Airlines canceled 836 flights scheduled to leave Denver International Airport on Sunday as a winter storm intensified, adding to the 11 inches of snow already piled up at the airport.

A few planes took off early Sunday morning, but most airlines are operating in a limited capacity, airport spokeswoman Alex Renteria said. Fifty-three flights were delayed.

Ten flights — including a few to much warmer Los Angeles — departed Sunday morning between 6 and 7 a.m., according to FlightView.com.

Airport officials closed all runways just before noon Sunday due to blowing snow and poor visibility. The closures will have little effect on operations since most flights were already canceled, airport officials said in a tweet.

More than 11 inches of snow fell at the airport between Saturday and Sunday morning and airport staff believe total accumulation could grow to 27 inches by Sunday night.

People with flights still scheduled Sunday afternoon and evening should check their flight status frequently and assume it will take longer to drive to the airport, according to a news release from airport staff. The facility is prepared with supplies should travelers become stuck at the airport overnight.

Flight schedules are expected to return to normal Monday, Renteria said.
