“Judensau” sculptures in Bavaria are allowed to stay – today

Covid-19 Vaccine

In Bavaria there are around a dozen “Judensau” sculptures on places of worship – these are anti-Jewish sculptures from the Middle Ages in the form of gargoyles, carvings or reliefs. And these should not be removed. The depiction of the so-called “Judensau” must be classified as “visible and easily recognizable”, emphasized Bavaria’s anti-Semitism officer Ludwig Spaenle in Munich. The regional association of the Jewish religious communities, representatives of the Christian churches and state institutions agreed on this. The round table voted unanimously against dismantling. If the sculptures were taken out of context, an explanation would be difficult, explained Spaenle. In addition, the representations could then no longer fulfill their warning function.
