Jerry Jeudy, Bradley Chubb, Baron Browning test positive for COVID-19 as Broncos lose more starters ahead of Chargers game

East-Village-New-York

A day after canceling practice for the first time this season, the Broncos’ coronavirus problem worsened Friday.

Three starters — receiver Jerry Jeudy, outside linebacker Bradley Chubb and inside linebacker Baron Browning — and reserve defensive lineman McTelvin Agim tested positive, coach Vic Fangio said, ruling them out for Sunday’s game at the Los Angeles Chargers.

As of 3 p.m., the Broncos had 16 players on the reserve list (14 from the active roster and two from the practice squad). Fangio said there’s been no talks yet between the league and the team about postponing Sunday’s game.

“I’m zeroed in on a Sunday kickoff,” Fangio said. “Until I’m told otherwise, I’m ready for a 1:05 (p.m.) kickoff West Coast time. (The virus issues) does change (the game plan), but it’s not like we’re re-creating the wheel here. We’re going to adjust some of the plays offensively to fit our personnel, both from a talent standpoint and a knowledge standpoint, and the same thing will happen defensively.”

Quarterback Drew Lock will make his second consecutive start without two of his top three receivers (Jeudy and Tim Patrick) and his right tackle (Massie). His top five receivers are expected to be Courtland Sutton (who Fangio said mid-day Friday could still be headed to the virus list), Kendall Hinton, Diontae Spencer, Seth Williams and Travis Fulgham. Williams and Fulgham will be practice squad call-ups.

“Anytime you lose a starter at any position, it becomes tough, but when you lose (more than one of your) starting receivers, it becomes a little more than tough, it becomes almost interesting at that point,” Lock said in a phone interview with The Denver Post on Friday. “It’s one of those things. We’re not the first team to deal with it. We have to go out and play our (butt) off and let these young guys and kind of first-timers go out there and, shoot, let’s see what they can do.”

Depending on Sutton’s status, the Broncos (7-8) could be without as many as 10 starters due to virus and injury issues.

The Broncos cancelled practice Thursday and held only a walk-through Friday.

“One little walk-through; that’s all we’re going in with,” Lock said. “We’re going to tighten the screws up (Friday night) and (Saturday) and get on the guys to be in their play-books, be ready to go, know exactly what’s going on and let the dice roll.”

Hinton (218 snaps and 13 catches this year) has played 14 games, but Fulgham will make his Broncos’ debut and Williams his NFL debut.

The Broncos’ COVID-19 issues began Monday:

Monday: Outside linebacker Andre Mintze, who was on injured reserve, nose tackle Mike Purcell and practice squad defensive lineman Jonathan Harris. Mintze and Purcell could still be available Sunday.

Wednesday: Patrick, safety Caden Sterns, practice squad receiver Tyrie Cleveland and injured reserve offensive tackle Calvin Anderson.

Thursday: Massie, outside linebacker Stephen Weatherly and cornerbacks Bryce Callahan and Mike Ford.

Friday: Jeudy, Sutton, Cooper and Agim.

Each player who tested positive from Wednesday-Friday will not play Sunday. Broncos defensive line coach Bill Kollar is also in COVID protocols and won’t make the trip. Assistant defensive line coach Mike Hiestand will take over Kollar’s duties.

With so many starters out, Fangio noted he’s “confident and bullish in the guys who are going to be playing for us.”

“We’ve got some great opportunities for some guys who have been showing good on the practice field, like Seth Williams,” he said.

Cam Fleming is expected to start at right tackle; he started two games last month when Massie was out with an ankle injury.

At outside linebacker, Malik Reed and Aaron Patrick are the remaining healthy players on the roster, but Mintze could be activated and the Broncos will call up Pita Taumoepenu from the practice squad.

Kyle Fuller will take over the nickel spot for Callahan, and Nate Hairston could play the dime for Sterns.

Minus Browning at inside linebacker, the Broncos will likely turn to Micah Kiser alongside Jonas Griffith.

On special teams, coordinator Tom McMahon said cornerback Michael Ojemudia will make his 2021 debut in Ford’s role. Running back Damarea Crockett will be a practice squad call-up.

With Fangio’s job potentially on the line over the last two weeks of the regular season, and the Broncos preparing for the Chargers with a roster full of backups, he remained upbeat.

“Our guys’ attitude during the walk-thru was tremendous,” Fangio said. “I thanked them for that, I admire them for that, and I expected that.”

Lock said he is “absolutely” excited to see what the fill-in players can do, particularly at receiver.

“It’s been fun throwing the ball to these guys on the scout team and putting the football out there for them seeing what they can do and say, ‘Wow, that was a great play,’ by whoever it may be,” Lock said. “There is an excitement to these guys going out there. It’s fun.

“I remember when I was the young guy (in 2019) and I’m sure guys around me said, ‘We’re going to see what this young can do,’ and we went out and did what we did my rookie year (4-1 record). I’m hoping these guys can come out, I can get them the ball and they can have a helluva experience for their first time out there.”

Among the non-virus injuries, inside linebacker Kenny Young (concussion) and cornerback Ronald Darby (shoulder) are listed as questionable. Offensive tackle Drew Himmelman and inside linebacker Barrington Wade were reinstated from the COVID-19/reserve list to the practice squad so they are also call-up options for Sunday.

Lock will be making his 20th start and will lean on that experience to keep the offense organized with so many new faces.

“That’s my No. 1 goal right now during the walk-through, calling everything with confidence, letting guys get set, not pressing the tempo,” Lock said. “(I’m saying), ‘If you need to ask a question and get set, let’s talk about it and figure it out so when we get out there Sunday, I can still be a calming voice for you and give you a here and there about where you need to be and what you need to do, but you’re going to be confident because I’m going to step into the huddle, look into your eyes and I’m going to convince you that each play is called is going for a touchdown.’”
