The often requested “Swedish Way” has a fatal disadvantage. Covid is now number 3 of the causes of death there.

In the spring, the “Swedish Way” made regular headlines. Unlike most European countries, the decision was made here not to impose any restrictions on public life. While they were locked down in neighboring countries, the Swedes continued to party and shop as if there was no pandemic.

In Austria, too, some, more liberal-oriented parties, demanded a greater influence of the Swedish strategy. The latest figures show what price it was. In the first half of 2020, Covid-19 was the third leading cause of death.

Mortality increased 14 percent

In just four months, around 5,500 people died in Sweden (with a little over ten million inhabitants) as a result of Covid disease. In Austria it was “only” 700 during this period. In Sweden this number also contributed to a general increase in mortality. Compared to 2019, this has increased by ten percent for women and even 14 percent for men. Corona was also the most common cause of death in April. The number of infections and deaths is currently rising again in Sweden. In the meantime, however, there are measures in place in some places, such as a mask requirement on public transport.
