In view of the dramatic increase in corona infections in the Spanish capital, Madrid, the regional government has “urgently” requested soldiers as well as additional police officers and doctors from outside. With almost 700,000 infected people and more than 31,000 corona deaths, Spain is the country in Western Europe hardest hit by the pandemic. A third of all second wave infections are currently in Madrid. Regional President Isabel Díaz Ayuso has announced further restrictions that are not further explained for Friday. Because of the economic consequences, she describes a closure of the entire capital region with 6.6 million inhabitants as only “a last resort”.
