Scientists from Münster discover that the well-known antidepressant Prozac can be used in the treatment of Covid-19. They find out that the drug effectively stops the Sars-CoV-2 virus from spreading in the body. And that’s not all. A research group from the Center for Molecular Biology of Inflammation (ZMBE) at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster (WWU) has investigated the possibility of using the antidepressant fluoxetine against Covid-19. In a preliminary study, Ursula Rescher’s team came to the conclusion that the drug, better known as Prozac, could play a decisive role in the treatment of corona patients.

The scientists are working on antiviral agents that act at the interface between host and pathogen. The aim is to find drugs that inhibit the absorption of Sars-CoV-2 viruses in this area and reduce the severity of an illness. In doing so, they rely on drugs that have already been approved because, at best, they are safe, inexpensive and available globally. The task of Prozac, which has been used since 1988, is actually to increase the serotonin level by inhibiting the resumption of the “happiness hormone”. This has a mood-enhancing effect and is said to alleviate the symptoms of depression. The research team found that the drug can apparently also effectively inhibit the Sars-CoV-2 virus by preventing the pathogen from being absorbed into cell culture and from spreading without damaging cells or tissue.

And Prozac might not be the only known drug that the Münster scientists have discovered for the fight against Covid-19. Fluoxetine belongs to the FIASMA group (functional inhibitors of acid sphingomyelinase). This comprises a large number of pharmacological agents that inhibit the ASM enzyme and regulate both cell growth and cell death. Tests have shown that the drugs amidarone and imipramine from the FIASMA group also inhibit the uptake and spread of Sars-CoV-2 in the cell. FIASMA-based drugs are considered tolerable and are widely used in clinical applications. “Research into licensed drugs that are already in use could lead to many active ingredients also being used antivirally,” says Ursula Rescher. And Covid 19 patients would also benefit from this through more therapy options.
