In the Italian capital Rome, protests against the government’s corona policy led to clashes between demonstrators and the police. According to media reports, several hundred people gathered in the central Campo de ‘Fiori. They opposed a possible new lockdown. Bottles and fireworks were seen on videos and on television falling at police officers. Officials used batons to attack the crowd, often made up of young people. Some wore Italy flags or green, white and red face masks. According to the Ansa News Agency, some continued their demonstration in another part of the city. Right-wing extremists were among the organizers. In the evening there was another demonstration in which left groups protested against social problems as a result of the crisis.

In Florence, Tuscany, protesters clashed with the police on Friday evening. According to Ansa, there have been some arrests and around two dozen reports. Rome has warned that extremists left and right could take advantage of many people’s displeasure with the restrictions.

Meanwhile, new infections in Italy rose to a new high of 31,758 cases. The Ministry of Health also announced that 297 people had died after being infected and that the corona numbers in Italy have been rising rapidly since October. At the same time as the second Corona wave, Italy’s Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte lost its popularity. As a representative survey by the research institute Ipsos showed, approval for the head of the center-left government in Rome dropped by seven percentage points compared to the previous month to a value of 58 percent at the end of October. The government of the independent lawyer has tightened restrictions on citizens several times. The popularity of the entire government, led by the Five Star Movement and the Social Democrats (PD), also fell from 62 to 55 points. According to Ipsos, the right-wing Lega of opposition leader Matteo Salvini in Italy remains the strongest single force with just under 25 percent. It is followed by PD with just under 21 percent.
