Spaniards are not allowed to leave their homes for two months in the spring. Compared to this, the government’s current measures are rather mild. Nevertheless, violent protests erupt in some cities. Violent protests against the government’s corona restrictions have broken out again in Spain. Stones and other bullets were thrown at police officers in Barcelona on Saturday evening. In the northern Spanish city of Logrono, around 150 people attacked the security forces with stones, set containers on fire and looted shops, the police reported.

In Haro in the La Rioja wine-growing region, riot police had to step in to contain the unrest. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez criticized the violent protests. “We will only be able to defeat the pandemic with responsibility, unity and a willingness to make sacrifices,” tweeted the socialist head of government. “Violent and irrational behavior by a few is unacceptable. This is not the way to go.” Already on Friday around 50 demonstrators in Barcelona attacked the police with stones, set dumpsters on fire and looted shops. 14 people were arrested and 30 injured. Riots had also broken out in the cities of Burgos, Vitoria, Santander, Valencia and Saragossa. Spain is one of the countries hardest hit by the pandemic. The government had therefore imposed a nationwide state of emergency by the beginning of May. Only the Canary Islands are exempt from night curfews and travel restrictions. Discos and bars are closed everywhere, indoor or outdoor meetings are only allowed with a maximum of six people. In Catalonia there is also a partial lockdown, which affects shopping centers, sports studios and cultural institutions, among other things.
