Fireworks and Corona do not go together – police and politicians for New Year’s Eve ban – today

Irland

The Netherlands have banned New Year’s fireworks. Now the discussion is getting loud in this country too. Rockets and firecrackers would promote crowds, according to the German police union. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, domestic politicians and police trade unionists are calling for a firecracker ban on New Year’s Eve. Alcohol, groups of people and a party atmosphere quickly joined the fireworks – and that was not hip, said the chairman of the German Police Union, Rainer Wendt, of the “Bild” newspaper. The CSU Bundestag member Michael Kuffer also pleaded in the paper for banning gunfire and fireworks this year. The North Rhine-Westphalian Interior Minister Herbert Reul also spoke out against firecrackers and rockets. “It was very quiet in our party strongholds on Halloween weekend,” said the CDU politician. “I wish that it will be the same again on New Year’s Eve.” The municipalities would have to decide. In Berlin, with a view to the infection situation, the Greens had called for fireworks to be banned on New Year’s Eve in addition to large parties. Germany should follow the example of the Netherlands, it said. At the end of last week, they were the first European country to impose a complete ban on fireworks. Rockets and firecrackers may not be bought or set on fire. The main argument: The ban is intended to relieve the health system.
