Due to the threat of overcrowding in intensive care units in the next two weeks, California could further tighten measures to contain the corona pandemic. With hospital admissions on the rise and the need for intensive care beds, Governor Gavin Newsom warns, “If these trends continue, we will have to take more dramatic, possibly drastic, action.” In parts of the state, as at the beginning of the pandemic, there could be a stay at home order again, albeit in a modified form, Newsom said. California is the most populous US state. In the past 14 days, an average of around 13,000 new infections per day were recorded there. In total, more than 1.2 million infections with the Sars-CoV-2 pathogen have been detected there since the beginning. On Monday, stricter requirements came into force for the approximately ten million residents of the Los Angeles district, which are intended to contain the spread of the virus. Among other things, all public and private gatherings with people from another household are prohibited.
