Aurora man convicted of attempted murder in 2020 high-speed pursuit in Weld, Larimer counties

An Aurora man who police say sprayed officers with bear spray and then shot at them during a pursuit last summer has been convicted of a number of felonies, including attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault and vehicular eluding.

James Nicholson, 52, was convicted by a jury last week, according to a news release issued Friday by the Weld County District Attorney’s Office. He could face more than 100 years in prison if a judge finds at a hearing in September that he’s a habitual offender, the release said.

Police said officers were called to an apartment on 10th Street in Greeley on July 11, 2020 after residents reported that a man matching Nicholson’s description had a gun and was trying to get into their apartment. When officers arrived, they tried to contact Nicholson as he was walking away from the apartment complex, and he took off running.

During a foot chase, police said Nicholson turned around and sprayed two officers with bear mace. They were unable to see and had trouble breathing. The suspect got into a vehicle and drove off, authorities said. During the high-speed chase that ensued, police said they saw Nicholson’s rear window shatter followed by eight to 10 muzzle flashes coming from inside his vehicle.

The chase moved from Greeley to Larimer County, where the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office was able to immobilize Nicholson’s vehicle in Loveland.

Nicholson was also convicted of two counts of second-degree assault, two counts of third-degree assault and possession of a controlled substance.
