No surprises Trump obviously didn’t care about Corona

US President Trump’s handling of the corona pandemic is not negligent, but negligent. The corona outbreak in the White House was therefore probably only a matter of time. When journalist Bob Woodward asked him in April if he was worried about infecting himself with the coronavirus, Donald Trump just waved him off. “Anyway, you’re taking the risk,” Woodward said to Trump, “the way you’re out and about having these briefings and getting together with people. Are you worried about that?” “No, I don’t,” Trump replied. “I don’t know why, but I’m not worried.” Woodward wanted to know why. “I don’t know,” Trump repeated, then changed the subject. It’s not just that he’s uncomfortable with the topic because it disrupts his campaign. He obviously doesn’t care. Woodward describes this scene in his book “Rage”, CNN has just published the excerpt from the phone call in which Trump said this. The president openly admits that Covid-19 is “so easily transferable, you wouldn’t believe it”.

Trump’s “election campaign from the clinic” US expert: “An act of desperation”

Nevertheless, he has always drastically downplayed the risk of the pandemic. “It will go away,” he said of the virus in February, “one day – like a miracle – it will go away”. At the end of March, Trump announced that the “end of our historic battle against the invisible enemy” was approaching. A week ago he said at a White House appearance that “tremendous progress” was being made. “We’re about to get there. And, very importantly, vaccines are coming, but we’re just about to get there.” The denial of the problem, the evocation of vaccines that are soon to come, the victory that is imminent: The principle of hope not only formed Trump’s personal hygiene concept and his campaign strategy, but was also at the center of his general pandemic preparedness. The consequences are known: More than 208,000 people have died in the USA as a result of a corona infection, more than in any other country. The United States is doing better by population, but still not doing well.

Infected at least twelve people in the White House

The careless handling of the pandemic now also has consequences for the president’s immediate environment: Not only Trump and his wife have become infected, numerous people with whom he has had contact also tested positive. According to a count by the news site vox.com, at least twelve people who work in the White House have been infected, including three journalists. In Cleveland, during the TV debate between Trump and Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, there were eleven infections. Such an outbreak was only a matter of time. “The White House has long disregarded basic public health rules,” Brown University professor of medicine Ashish K. Jha told the New York Times. “There are no surprises here.”

At the nomination ceremony for Judge Amy Coney Barrett on September 26th, no distance rules were observed.

The solemn nomination of lawyer Amy Coney Barrett as constitutional judge on September 26th in the rose garden of the White House with 150 guests could have been a superspreader event – at least in terms of the political consequences. So far, at least seven participants in the event have tested positive. Almost no one wore masks at this celebration, and distances were not observed. Why also? After all, the participants were all tested on the same day. One of them, University President John Jenkins, told the Washington Post that guests had been told “it is safe to take off the masks” – not only in the garden, but also in the White House. Ministers, senators and the family of the constitutional judge-designate were also close together inside. What they apparently haven’t been told: rapid tests are no guarantee of a correct result. On Friday, Jenkins, Republican Senator Mike Lee, and former Presidential Advisor Kellyanne Conway tested positive for Covid-19. Barrett had only received a negative test result on Friday morning. As a candidate for the Supreme Court, she is now tested daily. She was reportedly infected with the virus back in the summer. She is now healthy again.
