For personal reasons I would like to change my last name. However I am still on my retired vet father’s insurance, and claim lots of other benefits as a result. If I change my last name, will I have any problems with this? Or will I need to interact with him in some way to get things sorted?

Edit: Since some people are getting the impression that I am attempting to change my last name to be either quirky or I think it would be fun, I feel compelled to say that you are wrong. My father while serving his country did not do a good service to his family and was outright abusive my entire life, both emotionally and physically.

I am finally of age where I don’t need to share his last name because of social ties and to avoid causing confusion, because I have moved away and virtually started a new life, besides being reliant on his medical insurance because I have severe chronic health conditions. I feel that it would be appropriate to have a new last name to go along with it, as the only connection I have with the name is him.

This is not information I intended to share because in all seriousness I had a simple question that I hoped would be taken seriously and answered like any other. Thank you to those who answered this question honestly without judgment.
