Republicans, Trump, McConnell – now it comes down to “Darth Vader”

Terre-Haute

A few Republicans, who have always been against Trump, accepted the election result in the US. But the silence of her second most powerful husband after the incumbent President – Senate majority leader McConnell is becoming more and more booming. What does he want? The fireworks are over, leading politicians from all over the world have congratulated Joe Biden and he is now getting to work. At the start of the week, the future US president presents plans for everything he wants to tackle. All of America is now waiting for the new president. “All of America?”, One is tempted to ask and like in a wonderful French comic the answer is: “No”, except for one small – well, not a village, but a (white) house in Washington. There is still incumbent Donald Trump and does not want to see that he has lost.

USA “most important ally” Merkel congratulates Biden and makes an offer

But unlike Asterix and his Gallic colleagues, Trump has so far lacked the magical potion with which he could fight for a second term in office. Instead of a Miraculix, Trump only has a Rudy Giuliani. On the day Biden was declared the winner, he had embarrassed himself when he apparently mistook the “Vier Jahreszeiten” hotel in downtown Philadelphia for the “Vier Jahreszeiten” horticultural center on the outskirts of the city. It is also not entirely true that only the White House has not yet accepted the election result. Some of Trump’s 70 million voters are likely to believe their president’s fraud allegations. Just as they believed him everything else for the past four to five years. But there is no nationwide outcry. If Trump’s conspiracy talk were actually caught, tens of thousands of people would have to take to the streets and loudly demand recounts or stops. But this has only happened occasionally since Biden was declared the election winner.

After the end of the election mystery Democrats celebrate, Trump fans scold

What is striking is what comes from Trump’s Republican Party: silence. Sure, former President George W. Bush congratulated Biden, as did Senator Mitt Romney – but the former doesn’t have to become anything and the latter is already through with Trump anyway. But all those who still have their political career ahead of them are keeping a low profile. Above all, Mitch McConnell, the Senate majority leader. Since Trump became the lame duck, he’s been the most powerful Republican in the country. Should he distance himself from the president and congratulate Biden, Trump would be completely sidelined. But it doesn’t look like he’s going to do that. Like Trump, he is an absolute hate figure for the Democrats. He earned this status through his concrete blockade policy during the Obama years. First he said he wanted to make sure that he only got one term. Then he delayed the appointment of new judges until Trump came into office so that he could then select the candidates himself. McConnell is considered so nefarious and cold by the Democrats that they nicknamed him “Darth Vader”, the villain from “Star Wars”. Asterix and potions, on the other hand, are kid stuff. McConnell’s face reveals so little about so little about his thoughts that it actually reminds of a mask like the one the villain from “Star Wars” wears.

Defeat not admitted Trump etches against US election tradition

So far only two things have been heard from him: There will be a peaceful transfer of power and all “legal votes” should be counted. The expression “legal votes” has established itself in the past few days among Republicans for anyone who does not want to openly break with Trump. He fantasizes that Biden only won thanks to illegal votes. If you only count the “legal votes”, he is the clear winner. For all we know, that’s nonsense. But taken in isolation, the statement is of course correct: Only legal voices should decide between victory and defeat. So if you only say that, you have approved Trump without expressly supporting the accusation of electoral fraud. At the same time, if Trump loses in the end, he does not lean too far out of the window.

Trump still has great power

The fact that McConnell does not openly move away from the president has nothing to do with loyalty or loyalty. McConnell knows very well that Trump lost the election. But he also knows that Trump still has great power. Not because he will stay in office until January 20th, but because he still has so many enthusiastic supporters. Receiving Trump’s public blessing may be vital for Republicans going forward. McConnell himself can actually be sure of his re-election in his home state of Kentucky, but even there Trump is more popular than him. The same goes for the other Republican senators: they must all fear Trump’s anger if they turn against him too soon. This behavior is no surprise, because that’s exactly how it has been for the past four years. It was said again and again that behind closed doors many Republicans thought Trump was an incompetent idiot. But outwardly, they only shed out in exceptional cases. Now, with Trump’s last convulsions in office, only a few want to fully support Trump’s side. You would, as it were, bet on a dead horse. Still, they fear Trump’s revenge. Especially since it cannot be ruled out that Trump will run again in 2024.

Reactions to election victory Jäger: “Biden will lead tough China policy”

Where is this going now? Maybe McConnell is just waiting and trusting that Trump will see it at some point – at the latest when his lawsuits have failed. He can look forward to the next four years calmly. At the moment it looks like the Republicans can barely defend the majority in the Senate. That would keep him a great power in Washington. McConnell could become the one who decides the success or failure of Biden’s presidency. Because without him it will be difficult to organize majorities in the Senate. Some expect that he will even have a say in who gets a position in Biden’s cabinet.

Is the next blockage coming?

In Washington, Democrats fear that he could fully rely on blockade again. The Republican strategist Doug Heye said in the “Financial Times” that Biden would at best get through another corona aid package and an infrastructure program. Other possible projects such as tax and health reforms as well as measures against climate change are off the table. It is not clear whether this will actually happen. Because McConnell doesn’t always have it easy either. The senators by no means obey his word, but always want to be convinced anew. There are certainly candidates like Mitt Romney or Susan Collins who are considered willing to compromise and might not support a blockade. And Biden is not Obama, after all, the future president worked with McConnell in the Senate for decades. McConnell even announced in person in late 2016 that a cancer research bill would be named after Biden’s son Beau, who had died of a brain tumor. It was a parting gift for Biden, whose tenure as Vice President and Senate Chairman ended. That “Darth Vader” McConnell now simply says: “May the force be with you, Joe” is still not to be expected. More like a constant fight on the Capitol, but without lightsabers or magic potions.
