In the corona pandemic, the development of a vaccine against Covid-19 continues. In order to be able to distribute a widely available and certified vaccine in the future, Unicef wants to order 520 million syringes this year. Transport times and storage conditions must be observed. The UN children’s aid organization Unicef has started extensive measures to prepare for possible corona vaccination campaigns. In order to create the conditions for a fast, safe and effective delivery of a possible vaccine, Unicef is currently procuring syringes and other necessary relief supplies together with the Gavi vaccine alliance and the World Health Organization (WHO), the UN organization in Cologne announced. This year 520 million syringes would be deposited in warehouses. “To vaccinate against Covid-19 worldwide will be one of the greatest efforts in human history, and we will have to react as quickly as the vaccines are produced,” said Unicef boss Henrietta Fore. “In order to move forward quickly later, we have to act quickly now.”

Next year, Unicef wants to order around one billion syringes for Covid-19 vaccinations alone – in addition to the 620 million that the children’s aid organization provides for vaccination programs against other diseases such as measles or typhus. In addition, the UN Children’s Fund also wants to procure five million safety boxes for the disposal of used syringes in order to avoid infection with blood-borne diseases.

Long delivery time by ship

The communication also stated that the vaccination alliance Gavi “will bear the costs for the procurement of syringes and safe disposal boxes as part of the long-term cooperation with Unicef”. The material will then be used for the Covax initiative for vaccications against Covid-19 in poorer countries and, if necessary, for other vaccination programs funded by Gavi. Unicef pointed out in its communication that the procurement of vaccination supplies had a long lead time. Since syringes and safety boxes are bulky, they ultimately have to be transported by ship. The material can then be stored for up to five years. Heat-sensitive vaccines, on the other hand, are transported by air. In order to ensure that vaccines are transported and stored at the right temperature, Unicef now wants to review the existing cold chains and storage capacities in the public as well as in the private sector. The novel coronavirus has already killed more than 1.11 million people worldwide. A number of countries are currently grappling with a second wave of the pandemic. Worldwide there are currently ten possible corona vaccines in the final test phase, in some countries vaccines have already been approved, in some cases only for certain population groups.
