Rockies blasted 13-0 in home series opening loss to Dodgers

Growing visitor fan chants of “Let’s go Dodgers” rose above late-game silence Thursday night as the Rockies were pummeled 13-0 at Coors Field.

At least the cool weather was perfect.

Colorado dropped to 45-55 on the season, last place in the NL West, with three more home games ahead facing the division-leading Dodgers. Most everything about the Rockies’ loss Thursday felt self-inflicted.

Three players — catcher Elias Diaz, first baseman Connor Joe and starting pitcher Jose Urena — all committed throwing errors. Urena got blasted for 10 runs (seven earned) on eight hits in his worst outing of the year.

“He couldn’t command any of his pitches,” manager Bud Black said of Urena. “It was a struggle for him from the start. He was behind in the count and not many first-pitch strikes. … Tonight, he just couldn’t get any momentum.”

Rockies bats were stymied by former Rockies starter Tyler Anderson. The Dodgers southpaw gave up just four hits over seven scoreless innings. The Rockies threatened in the fifth with a Kris Bryant double and Brendan Rodgers single. But Diaz popped out to end the frame. Colorado went 1 of 7 with runners in scoring position on the night.

Rodgers was the lone bright spot with four hits.

Colorado Rockies first base Connor Joe (9) hits a broken-bat ground out to third against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the third inning at Coors Field July 28, 2022.

The Rockies trailed 6-0 after only two innings and gifted LA runs on Diaz’s throwing error to third and a wild pitch from Urena. The Dodgers were powered by Trea Turner and Will Smith, who each ripped doubles that combined to score four runs in the second inning alone.

Urena settled in for the third and retired the side in order. However, with no outs in the fourth inning, he gave up consecutive singles followed by a throwing error to first that loaded the bases. He was pulled from the game after Smith launched a two-run single to put the Dodgers ahead 8-0 — pleasing a Dodgers-centric crowd of 32,182 with plenty of blue inside Coors Field.

“The plan was to try and show them the top of the zone and throwing high fastballs,” Urena said. “But we fell down too many times. I think that was the game.”

Austin Gomber entered in relief for the Rockies and three more LA runs scored (Gavin Lux RBI single and Cody Bellinger RBI double). Colorado right-hander Justin Lawrence also gave up a two-run double to Freddie Freeman in the seventh.

Rockies catcher Brian Serven pitched a scoreless ninth inning to close the game.
