Person of the Week – Ilham Aliyev Armenia is betrayed by the West

Turkey and Azerbaijan win a war of invasion against Armenia. An Islamic pincer grip is supposed to hit the oldest Christian state in the world. The two despots Erdogan and Aliyev cheer. The west looks the other way. The timing was cleverly chosen: the attack on Armenia started just as the USA and Europe were acutely busy with other things. America sank into itself for a few weeks with Trump being voted out of office, and Europe was caught in the second wave of the corona pandemic. The time was perfect for a quick, dirty war in the Caucasus, so the allied despots Erdogan and Aliyev struck. Oil-rich Azerbaijan invaded with massive support from Turkey – flanked by specially hired Islamist mercenaries from Syria, whose brutality is feared throughout the Middle East. Tiny Armenia had no chance against the military superiority, also because the Azerbaijanis were equipped with the most modern drone weapons and acted brutally. Human rights organizations report of cluster bombs against the civilian population and of targeted attacks on hospitals and churches because they carried Christian crosses. Armenians prisoners of war are said to have been tortured and filmed. Reports of the beheading of soldiers and the mutilation of corpses are currently being examined by the OSCE and the UN. Videos of executions prompted the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, to call out for alarm that war crimes were to be feared.

For Turkey and Azerbaijan, the conquest of Nagorno-Karabakh is an Islamic liberation struggle against Christian Armenia. Erdogan declared the war of religion “to free the region from the unbelievers”. Little Armenia – a state the size of Brandenburg – lies like a Christian bolt between two Muslim brother states that pay homage to the official slogan “One nation, two states”. A historical nightmare is returning for Armenia, because exactly 100 years ago the Armenians were unprotected victims of the Turkish genocide.

Armenia has desperately pleaded for help in Europe and America over the past few weeks. But the West was busy with elections and Corona, remained silent and looked away. Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said in the Bundestag on October 29th: “A military solution to the long-running conflict will not be accepted by the international community. A better negotiating position cannot be achieved on the battlefield.” A grotesque misjudgment, because that is exactly what has happened now. Only Russia half-heartedly came to the aid of Armenia, at least forced the current armistice and is now sending peacekeeping troops to the front. Putin is once again showing himself to the world as a power of order and at the same time exposing the glaring weakness of the West.

But Armenia is the big loser of the war that was deliberately waged in the shadow of the pandemic. Erdogan and Aliyev will now exploit the military victory domestically for their power propaganda. For both, the war was also an opportunity to divert attention from internal tensions and problems: Erdogan is struggling with a severe economic and currency crisis, while Aliyev is losing the opportunity to resolve internal conflicts with money when the price of oil has fallen. Social tensions and political pressure from Islamists are growing in both countries. Armenia is a grateful scapegoat sacrifice for both of them. Both Erdogan and Aliyev are fueling the war in the name of Allah to save their own power. The President of the Turkish Parliament Mustafa Sentop shouted to Aliyev in the capital Baku: “May Allah bless you and grant you victory.” Defeating and humiliating Armenia has great symbolic meaning for both – after all, Armenia declared Christianity the state religion as early as 301 and thus became the world’s first Christian state.

And so now shattering images go around the world of wounded Armenian families celebrating their last services in churches and monasteries from the 4th century and desperately clearing their villages. Many burn down their houses so that they cannot be used by the Muslim occupiers. A major ethnic cleansing is being started. Of all people, perpetrated on a people who suffered the first systematic genocide of the 20th century 100 years ago. In massacres and death marches in 1915 and 1916, the Turks drove more than a million people to their deaths simply because they were Christians. The Armenians thus became victims of a Turkish policy of expulsion and extermination, which is now being continued.
