Great Britain, Italy or Spain – the lockdown measures do not yet seem to be taking effect. Many European countries are reporting high levels of infections and deaths in the corona pandemic. New, alarming corona numbers are reported from several European countries: According to the British authorities, more than 50,000 people have already died in Great Britain as a result of an infection with the corona virus – more than in any other country in Europe. Spain passed the 40,000 corona death mark and Italy has registered more than a million infections since the pandemic began in spring. In the UK, the number of corona deaths rose to a total of 50,369 after health officials reported another 595 deaths within 24 hours. That was the highest number since the peak of the pandemic in May, when 612 deaths were registered within 24 hours. A further 22,950 people were newly infected with the virus within one day.

“Every death is a tragedy,” said British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Britain is “not yet out of the woods”, he added, calling on citizens to adhere to government restrictions. The Spanish authorities reported a total of 40,105 deaths after a record number of deaths had been recorded within 24 hours the previous day. In total, more than 1.4 million people were infected with the virus, the Spanish authorities said. Italy, which was the first European country to be badly hit by the pandemic in the spring, has meanwhile reported more than a million corona infections. The Italian authorities recorded 32,961 new cases and 623 deaths in the past 24 hours. In total, almost 43,000 people died in the country as a result of corona disease. Italy has the third highest death rate in the EU after Great Britain and France.
