Italy adopts emergency measures worth billions

The government in Rome has approved a draft budget with new measures totaling around 40 billion euros for anti-corona measures and strengthening the ailing economy. The government announced that the cabinet had approved the draft law presented by Finance Minister Roberto Gualtieri for the budget year 2021 and the multi-year budget until 2023. The plans include “a substantial budget increase” to protect the health of citizens and Italy’s economic stability. Around four billion euros are planned for the health system, including the extension of temporary contracts for 30,000 doctors and nurses. Around six billion euros are to flow into schools and universities, four billion euros are earmarked for aid in crisis sectors of the economy. In addition, the center-left government of Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte wants to top up a special unemployment fund. Large sums are planned for families, tax reform and support for the poor South.
