Filmmaker Ted Geoghegan (“We Are Still There”) shared the sad news on Twitter. “Hugh Keays-Byrne, one of the unsung heroes of Australian cinema, died at the age of 73. (…) Sir, thank you for all the entertainment,” writes Geoghegan about two pictures of Keays-Byrne that portray him in his roles as first and so far last “Mad Max” horror witness. Keays-Byrne was part of George Miller’s cinematic “Tour de Force” from the very beginning. In the first part of 1979 he played the villain Toecutter, the leader of a motorcycle gang who made the life of the title hero Max Rockatansky – then played by Mel Gibson – hell. And Keays-Byrne was the central antagonist in the 2015 Oscar winner “Mad Max: Fury Road” with Tom Hardy – this time as the diabolical Immortan Joe. Geoghegan has not yet given any information about the exact circumstances of death.
