The film world mourns one of its screen villains: the actor Hugh Keays-Byrne is dead. The role as “Mad Max” opponent made the Australian known worldwide at the end of the 1970s. Filmmaker Ted Geoghegan (“We Are Still There”) shared the sad news on Twitter. “Hugh Keays-Byrne, one of the unsung heroes of Australian cinema, died at the age of 73. (…) Sir, thank you for all the entertainment,” writes Geoghegan about two pictures of Keays-Byrne that portray him in his roles as first and so far last “Mad Max” horror witness. Keays-Byrne was part of George Miller’s cinematic “Tour de Force” from the very beginning. In the first part of 1979 he played the villain Toecutter, the leader of a motorcycle gang who made the life of the title hero Max Rockatansky – then played by Mel Gibson – hell. And Keays-Byrne was the central antagonist in the 2015 Oscar winner “Mad Max: Fury Road” with Tom Hardy – this time as the diabolical Immortan Joe. Geoghegan has not yet given any information about the exact circumstances of death.
