“Extremely dangerous hurricane” cyclone “Iota” threatens Central America

Covid-19 Aid

For the second time this year, Central America has to prepare for a life-threatening natural disaster. Hurricane “Eta” caused considerable damage. Thousands of people lost their homes. Now cyclone “Iota” is hurtling towards the already battered coastal areas. After the devastating “Eta”, the next strong hurricane is approaching Central America. “Iota” is expected to reach the coasts of Nicaragua and Honduras on Monday as an “extremely dangerous” category four hurricane – that is, with wind speeds of 211 to 250 kilometers per hour, the US National Hurricane Center announced. It is expected to bring with it potentially catastrophic winds, a life-threatening storm surge and extreme rain. On Sunday night the storm had gained strength and had become the 13th hurricane of this year’s season in the Atlantic. Preparations have been made and warnings issued in several countries.

Over 150 fears feared Hurricane “Eta” wreaks havoc in Central America

The region is already ailing – it is still suffering from the consequences of “Eta”. It hit the coast of Nicaragua on November 3rd as a hurricane. He devastated areas in several countries and flooded entire areas. Millions of people in Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean were affected. Thousands of families lost their homes. According to the World Vision organization, 1.5 million people urgently need humanitarian aid. The storm hit a largely poor region that has already been weakened by the coronavirus pandemic and its economic effects.

150 deaths from “Eta”

The total number of confirmed deaths in the region from “Eta” is more than 150, most of them in Honduras and Guatemala. Not counting the residents of a village in Guatemala that was buried in a landslide. The search for the estimated 100 victims was canceled because the conditions were too dangerous. “Iota” is the 30th storm this year strong enough to get a name – the previous record was 28. In this year’s hurricane season in the Atlantic, which lasts from June to November, so many strong storms have formed that the 21 designated names have long been used up. For this reason, meteorologists used the Greek alphabet for the first time in 15 years. According to experts, the increasing intensity of tropical cyclones is a consequence of climate change.
