Dead and mass evacuations – Hurricane “Iota” rages in Central America

Harry-Meghan

Central America is facing a tragic “record season”. There are more hurricanes than ever before devastating villages and nature. “Iota” follows just two weeks after “Eta” kills more than 200 people. Again there are fatalities. Just two weeks after the devastating hurricane “Eta”, Hurricane “Iota” hit Central America. As a hurricane of the highest category 5, “Iota” reached the coast of Nicaragua on Monday evening, just under 24 hours later it weakened into a tropical storm. In Nicaragua and Honduras, the authorities have brought thousands of people to safety, but there have been no reports of victims there. In contrast, “Iota” caused a first death and serious damage on the Colombian island of Providencia. Another person died in Panama.

According to the authorities in Nicaragua, “Iota” hit land south of Bilwi on Monday evening with winds of up to 250 kilometers per hour. The storm was then downgraded from category 5 to category 4 on the hurricane scale and weakened further inland. According to the telecommunications provider Telcor, the power went out in the area. Trees were uprooted, roofs torn from houses.

The authorities had brought thousands of people from the coastal areas of Nicaragua and Honduras to safety before the storm hit. Around San Pedro Sula, the second largest city in Honduras, tens of thousands of people were picked up by boats and helicopters. Authorities warned of persistent heavy rainfall after the region was hit by tropical storm “Eta” just two weeks ago. On the tiny Colombian Caribbean island of Providencia, “Iota” partially covered the roof of the hospital. With more than 6000 residents, the power failed, said island police chief John Fredy Sepulveda. According to the German Weather Service, “Iota” was the first hurricane of the highest category 5 “in this record season” with already 13 hurricanes in the Atlantic. “Iota” follows the route of the hurricane “Eta”, which killed more than 200 people in Central America two weeks ago.

Hundreds of thousands of people were made homeless and the infrastructure was seriously damaged. “Iota”, with its heavy rains, hits soil that has already been softened and could thus cause even more floods and landslides. Scientists attribute it in particular to climate change that the storms are increasing in frequency and severity.
