The Broncos are awaiting a “final verdict” on inside linebacker Josey Jewell’s pectoral injury, Broncos coach Vic Fangio said Monday, while outside linebacker Bradley Chubb re-aggravated his ankle injury and there is no timetable for his return.

Jewell sustained the injury when he made a tackle covering a second-quarter punt in Sunday’s 23-13 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Justin Strnad replaced Jewell on defense.

Chubb, who missed the Week 1 win over the New York Giants, started against the Jaguars and played 19 first-half snaps before aggravating his ankle injury during a pass rush against left tackle Cam Robinson. Chubb pounded his fist on the turf while being attended to by trainers and then slammed his helmet as he entered the medical tent.

If Jewell misses significant time, Strnad — who made his NFL debut in Week 1 after spending all of 2020 on injured reserve (wrist surgery) — would take his place in the Broncos’ base defense alongside Alexander Johnson. Fangio said he hasn’t decided yet if Strnad would handle the defensive calls like he did in the preseason when Jewell was sidelined with a hamstring injury. Johnson handled the calls in Jewell’s place against in Jacksonville.

Chubb’s absence would move Malik Reed back to being a starter opposite Von Miller and increase the playing time for rookies Jonathon Cooper and Andre Mintze. Chubb’s injury issues since joining the Broncos as the fifth overall pick in 2018 includes a torn ACL in ’19, missing the end of ’20 with an ankle injury that required offseason injury and now the current issue to the other ankle.

The Broncos beat the Jaguars without cornerback Ronald Darby, who is on injured reserve for at least two more games because of a hamstring injury sustained against the Giants.
