Asbestos – A Canadian city gets a new name

Admittedly, Asbestos (German: Asbest) is really not a positive name for a city. This is what the inhabitants of the town, which is around 170 kilometers east of the Canadian metropolis of Montreal, thought too. After a referendum by the population, the city is now to be renamed Val-des-Sources (German: Valley of the Sources). A little more than half of the participants in the survey decided on the new name, as Mayor Hugues Grimard has now announced. Asbestos, with around 7,000 inhabitants today, was originally named after the minerals that have been mined there since the 19th century. For decades, a large part of the asbestos processed in the world was produced here, which is now banned in many countries because of its health hazards. The mine was closed in 2011 – since then the city has been economically stricken. According to the council members, the name means that no new investors want to settle in the place.
