An extreme athlete wants to immortalize himself in the Guinness Book of Records with a daring action: John Bream jumps 40 meters down without a parachute – and passes out on impact. The stunt joins a list of life-threatening jumps. A British man plunged into the sea from a helicopter from a height of about 40 meters to set a world record. When he hit the water hard without a parachute – at around 120 kilometers per hour – John Bream was briefly passed out and had to be rescued by divers. It was still unclear whether the 34-year-old’s action would be officially recognized. Helpers reported an awkward jump in which the former parachutist hit his head. On the way to the hospital, however, he talked and joked again, reported British media. The daring action took place off the small island of Hayling near the southern English city of Portsmouth. A spokesman for the Guinness Book of Records wished Bream “a quick recovery” after the accident on Monday, but did not want to confirm a record. In such actions you only consider experienced jumpers or you have to be able to understand the record very carefully afterwards, said the spokesman for the Guardian.

After a short faint, the 34-year-old can laugh again.

Bream, who is nicknamed “The Flying Fish”, also wants to raise money for charity with the campaign. The money is to benefit veterans. His courage during the jump cannot be compared to the courage that soldiers at the front showed, said Bream. The donations are to go to two charities that provide British veterans with psychological support.

Trend towards extreme sports

The German extreme athlete Christian Guth learned a few years ago how difficult it is to jump out of a helicopter from a great height. When jumping from a height of 43 meters, he landed incorrectly and suffered serious injuries. Guth is very successful at sports championships in splash diving, where the jumper first touches the water with his buttocks – also known among laypeople as the butt bomb competition. Many daring actions are recorded in the Guinness Book of Records, including the highest jump from a cliff without aids: In 2015, the German-Brazilian Laso Schaller jumped down from a nearly 59 meter high waterfall in Switzerland. The extreme athlete had been preparing for it for several years. One of the completely insane endeavors that ended without injuries is a jump by the American Luke Aikins, who dropped out of a plane four years ago from a height of 7,600 meters above the California desert without a parachute. He had to fall on a huge web of tension to survive. But here, too, a lot of experience was involved: Aikins runs a skydiving school himself, is a pilot, has been a stuntman in films and spent a year and a half preparing for the leap of his life.
