After a test run over the weekend, around five million citizens are now being asked to smear. Over the next two weekends, the Slovak government wants to test almost the entire population of the country for the corona virus. Prime Minister Igor Matovic announced on Monday evening that the national Corona crisis team had approved the plan after a pilot phase was successfully completed last weekend. The founder of the populist-conservative election platform Ordinary People OLaNO announced the plan just a week ago.

From Friday to Sunday, four areas on the Polish border that were particularly badly affected by the pandemic were tested, a total of around 180,000 people. In the next two phases, all residents over ten years old in the rest of the country are to be subjected to a rapid antigen test within four days, on Saturdays and Sundays. Participation in the tests is officially voluntary. However, anyone who cannot show a negative corona test in the days after the test has to go into a ten-day forced quarantine.

A feeling of security can be deceptive

The fact that the Fridays, which were also initially planned, were canceled is due to a staff shortage that health experts had warned of. Health Minister Marek Krajci said it was easier to find enough helpers on the two days off than on Friday. On Sunday, Defense Minister Jaroslav Nad, who was responsible for the organization, did not rule out the possibility that the tests of almost five million people might have to be canceled due to a lack of staff. Krajci had called on medical students and health workers to volunteer. In addition, the army is providing around 8,000 soldiers for the next mass tests. Matovic expected that the project could set an example for all of Europe. Chancellor Angela Merkel also showed great interest in talking to him, reported the head of government. Even in this first phase, “an estimated 6000 potential spreaders of the virus were discovered, which under normal circumstances could not have been noticed,” said Matovic to the TV broadcaster TA3. But he also admitted that doubts about the accuracy of the rapid tests were justified and warned of a “deceptive feeling of security”. Even those who got a negative test result should continue to pay attention to safety rules such as wearing mouth and nose protection.
