The new and apparently more contagious variant of the coronavirus B.1.1.7 was first detected in the USA. The mutation was diagnosed in a 20-year-old patient in the state of Colorado, as the local governor Jared Polis announced via the online service Twitter. The man is in quarantine in the Elbert administrative district. He hadn’t been traveling.

The USA is the country in the world hardest hit by the corona pandemic. Around 19.3 million people have been infected with the virus there, and more than 335,000 people have died in connection with the infection, according to information from Johns Hopkins University. The new form of the coronavirus has spread widely in southern England. It was also found in two patients in Canada last weekend. These were the first known cases of infection with this virus variant in North America.
