Probably brought to Florida as a pet, the Burmese python has no natural predators there. On the contrary: it happily feeds its way through the warm wetlands and does not even stop at alligators. Hunters have now shot a record. Proud prey: In Florida, two hunters set a new hunting record by killing a giant snake. At 5.71 meters, the Burmese python is the largest snake of the invasive species that has been hunted in the US state, the wildlife authorities announced on Friday. A published picture shows two hunters, Ryan Ausburn and Kevin Pavlidis, at either end of the giant snake that stretches the width of a country road. The 47 kilogram animal was killed around 60 kilometers away from the metropolis of Miami. The killing of the “female snake is a triumph for our native wildlife and our habitats,” the agency said. The previous record was catching a 5.68 meter long snake in 2013. Originating from Southeast Asia, the Burmese python is believed to have been introduced to Florida as an exotic pet in the 1990s and released in the wetlands of the Everglades. The snakes have no natural predators there and hunt down local wildlife by eating everything from raccoons to smaller alligators. The Florida Wildlife Agency pays hunters a bounty to catch the snakes.
