USA threatens with consequences – Turkey tests Russian S-400 system

Turkish President Erdogan confirms reports of tests with the controversial Russian missile defense system S-400. The US will not be asked for permission, Erdogan said. The Pentagon condemns the test “strongly”. Turkey has confirmed that it has tested the S-400 missile defense system that Russia has bought. “It’s true. Tests have been carried out, and more will follow,” said Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Istanbul. “We are not going to ask permission from the US.” Washington condemned the test and threatened “serious consequences”. The Turkish media close to the government reported last week about a first test kill in the northern province of Sinop on the Black Sea. The Turkish Ministry of Defense did not comment on the reports. The delivery of the first battery with Russian missiles last year already had consequences for Turkey: The USA threw the NATO partner from the production program for the latest generation of American F35 fighter planes.

The Pentagon condemned the test “strongly” and threatened Ankara with “serious consequences”. “We were clear and steadfast in our stance: an operational S-400 system is not in line with Turkey’s obligations as an ally of the US and NATO,” said a spokesman for the US Department of Defense. The US government sees a security risk in the Russian-style missile system, as it is not compatible with NATO’s military systems. Washington fears that Russia could gain access to sensitive NATO data should Ankara deploy and activate the Russian S400 missile defense system on its territory.
