Although the United States has been hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic in the world, US President Trump is campaigning as if there was no virus. Now a study shows: Trump’s appearances in front of crowded supporters have caused tens of thousands of infections and at least 700 deaths. In the fight for his re-election, US President Donald Trump systematically downplays the corona dangers despite the high number of infections – and conducts his election campaign largely as if there was no pandemic. Between June and September alone, the Republican held 18 election campaign events. Researchers at Stanford University have now calculated that these events led to at least 30,000 additional corona infections with 700 deaths.

Because, according to the study authors, it is almost impossible to detect every single infection at an election campaign event, the researchers took a different approach to determining the numbers: They examined the 18 districts in which Trump held his election campaign events and compared the infection numbers with around 200 districts in which there were no such events and which are demographically similar. The researchers point out that it makes a difference whether an event took place outside or inside. Nevertheless, Trump also increased the number of infections by encouraging his supporters to forego masks and distance rules. Even after his own Covid illness, he played down the corona risk even more verbatim than before. “I had it, here I am,” announced Trump at one of the appearances.

Meanwhile, the number of detected cases of infection in the United States rose again within 24 hours by at least 68,700 to around 9.24 million. At least 377 other people died in connection with the coronavirus. In total, there are now at least 231,097 deaths related to Covid-19. The United States is the country hardest hit by the pandemic in terms of both infections and deaths.

The President explains the enormous increase in corona cases with the fact that more tests are being carried out than before. “If we tested half as much, the number would be half as much.” In general, there is constant talk of the virus in the media. “If you turn on the television: ‘Covid, Covid, Covid, Covid, Covid'”, complained the President. “A plane crashes, 500 people are dead, they don’t talk about it. Covid, Covid, Covid, Covid.” The election rallies for Trump’s challenger Joe Biden were different: The Democrat spoke to people who came in their vehicles as if in a drive-in theater. They expressed their approval with a concert of horns. At one of the performances, rock star Jon Bon Jovi gave a mini concert. Hollywood actor Brad Pitt dubbed a new commercial for Biden.
