Officially, the US government follows Trump’s line and refuses to acknowledge Joe Biden’s victory, citing unproven allegations of mass election fraud. Behind the scenes, however, the assessment of the situation in the White House is apparently very different. The Washington Post reports that several high-ranking Trump advisers – including Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, the head of the National Republican Committee, Ronna McDaniel and Trump’s informal adviser Corey Lewandowski – openly admitted the defeat in non-public discussions. However, given Trump’s determination to do so officially, they refused to continue fighting.
The Democratic Senator Chris Coons reported something similar from Congress to CNN. Republican MPs congratulated him on Biden’s victory in personal conversations and even asked him to pass this on to the President-elect. But they couldn’t say this in public.
