“Let’s be honest with friends,” said one after a meeting. “About a third of what the president tells us to do is plain and simple stupid. Another third is impossible to do and wouldn’t solve a problem. And the last third would be illegal.” Stupid, impossible, illegal: If subordinates only come up with these three categories in the light of their boss’ instructions, that’s already a problem if it happens in some junk. But if the store is the White House and the boss is the President of the United States, the problem is bigger. Then it is sometimes about war and peace or the preservation of democracy in what is still the most powerful country on earth. Or at least what will one day be in the history books. After three years in office, one can surmise that Donald Trump will definitely be something unusual for a US president to read. Especially since Donald Trump’s history is documented in many books while it is being made and not just afterwards. The statement at the beginning of this article, which is said to have been made by a prominent advisor to the US President, is taken from the latest Trump experience report: A Warning is the name of the disclosure book that an allegedly high-ranking employee under the pseudonym “Anonymous” and that has now been published in English; the German-language version Warning from the White House will hit bookstores on December 12th.

Anonymous spoke for the first time in September 2018 in an opinion piece for the New York Times entitled “I Am Part of the Resistance Inside the Trump Administration”. This op-ed caused a stir because of the harshness of its criticism of Trump’s policies by someone who was actively involved in shaping them. Trump himself called the person in question “cowardly”. Identity, gender and exact background of Anonymous are still unknown today.

This time firsthand

The 300-page work A Warning hardly differs in content from previous Trump disclosure books such as Furcht von Bob Woodward, Feuer und Zorn von Michael Wolff and his sequel Unter Beschuss. The characterizations of Trump as intellectually inferior, self-centered, ignorant, lazy to learn, read and otherwise lazy, misogynous, high-spirited, unfocused, resistant to advice, addicted to television, small-minded, resentful, inclined to autocrats and so on: you know them from earlier books, and Corresponding conclusions can be drawn from many public appearances by the current US President. Regular reading of the New York Times and Washington Post could also produce similar results. Their excellent reporters pass on observations from the White House to the readership on a daily basis, and their previous reports from three years of Trump in the Oval Office are confirmed as almost without exception correct by the descriptions in A Warning (which their reviewers have already noted benevolently). The big difference between this book and all other texts about Trump is that the author has experienced or wants to know first-hand from colleagues what he or she is about to tell in the book. Anonymous does not need any sources, he or she is largely the source that sits close to the president, as a Republican government member (apparently not as a partisan career official) possibly even in the White House. And apparently to this day, that distinguishes Anonymous from former high-ranking Trump employees, who also recently published books.
