And again a damper for the current US president. On Friday evening, he met two top Michigan politicians. The two politicians were Mike Shirley, Majority Leader in the Michigan Senate, and Majority Leader in the House of Representatives Lee Chatfield. The chambers of parliament have to confirm the outcome of the election — a formal step towards the election of the new US president by the electoral body. Chatfield and Shirley are Republicans. And both make clear in a statement after the meeting that they could not see anything that
could question the outcome of the election in their state — even if Trump and his team contest the result. They assured Trump that they would follow the “normal procedure” regarding Trump’s complaints about the election result. Allegations of electoral fraud would be taken seriously, thoroughly investigated and, if proven, punished with full severity of the law. Trump responded to the meeting on Twitter with the usual unsubstantiated claims that the election was fraudulent and that he is yet to prove it.
