Defense budget approved – House of Representatives ignores Trump threat – today

Despite a threat of veto by US President Trump, the House of Representatives votes for the new defense budget. A large majority in the Congress Chamber votes in favor of the bill, which is also intended to block the planned withdrawal of troops from Germany. The US House of Representatives approved the legislative package on the defense budget with a majority that could overturn a veto threatened by US President Donald Trump. 335 MPs voted for the package (NDAA), 78 voted against. The number of supporters was thus well above the two-thirds majority. Trump had recently called on representatives of his Republicans in the parliamentary chamber to vote against the budget and renewed his threat of a veto. However, a majority of Republicans in the House of Representatives did not respond to the call of the voted president. The Senate is due to vote on the budget this week. For the law to go into effect, Trump must sign it. Among other things, the president has announced his veto over a dispute over the regulation of online platforms and a possible renaming of military bases. This veto could be overruled by a two-thirds majority in the House of Representatives and in the Senate – that is, in both chambers of Congress.

Members of the House of Representatives, which is controlled by the Democrats, and the Senate, which is dominated by Trump’s Republicans, agreed last Thursday on the legislative package on the defense budget for the coming year. The draft comprises more than 4,500 pages and has a budget of around 740 billion dollars (611 billion euros). As is usual in the USA, the package also deals with numerous regulations that are not directly related to the financing of the armed forces. Among other things, the draft stipulates that Trump’s planned massive withdrawal of American soldiers from Germany will be blocked for the time being. There it says that the US Secretary of Defense must state in a report to Congress whether such a withdrawal would be in the national interest of the US. At the earliest 120 days later, the number of US soldiers stationed in the Federal Republic may fall below the limit of 34,500. The draft also provides for threatened sanctions against the German-Russian Baltic Sea pipeline Nord Stream 2 to be expanded. The NDAA is one of a series of bills that Congress intends to pass before the end of the year. The defense budget was passed with bipartisan support for 59 consecutive years. Republican Trump lost the presidential election on November 3rd to Democrat Joe Biden. Trump continues to refuse to admit defeat.
