In the capital Washington, beverage dealers report a rush for sparkling wine and champagne. At the Calvert and Woodley specialty store on Connecticut Avenue, 70 to 75 percent more sparkling wine than normal is sold on the counter on Saturday. “We sold hundreds of bottles. People want to celebrate that!” Says a salesman. In the Magruder’s wine store in the Chevy Chase residential area, the shelves empty in no time and the sellers have to fetch more. “People buy two or three bottles at a time, that’s totally unusual,” says a cashier.
