In England, regionally different regulations to contain the pandemic will apply from Wednesday. The country is divided into three warning levels. Despite fierce opposition from sections of the conservative ruling party, the measures were adopted by a large majority – also thanks to numerous abstentions from the opposition. For large parts of the country this means a relaxation of the rules. Non-essential stores across the country have been closed since early November. Restaurants and pubs were also not allowed to open. This is now being partially withdrawn. Nevertheless, there is growing resistance to the measures, especially in Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Tory party. The government had imposed a second lockdown on England since early November. The regions of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own rules. In the UK, 602 new deaths were reported in people who tested positive for the virus within 24 hours. The number of deaths since the start of the pandemic rose to more than 59,000. In addition, 13,430 new infections were registered.
