What’s next for Broncos minus Von Miller? Some names to consider

When the Broncos report to the facility Wednesday morning, they will likely begin life without outside linebacker Von Miller, whose ankle injury late in Tuesday’s practice is expected to cost him the entire season.

Miller’s injury is doubly important because Bradley Chubb (ACL) has not practiced fully since Aug. 28. The Broncos have expressed optimism that Chubb will be available to play Monday against Tennessee, but coach Vic Fangio has said Chubb will be on a play count.

So who’s out there?

The quick roster move would be rookie seventh-round pick Derrek Tuzska, who was waived Saturday and signed to the practice squad Sunday.

Miller’s injury will create an immediate starting opportunity for Jeremiah Attaochu, who filled in for Chubb last year.

At this stage, the COVID-19 protocols would make it likely that if a veteran is signed, it will be after Monday’s game so he has time to get to town, undergo testing and then his team-issued physical.

Here are some names to consider:

Clay Matthews

Age: 34.

2019 team: Los Angeles Rams.

Statistics: In 156 games (150 starts), he has 91 1/2 sacks, including four double-digit sack years for Green Bay. He joined the Rams in 2019 after a decade with the Packers and had eight sacks in 13 games (614 snaps).

Comment: If the Broncos go this route, Matthews should top their list. He showed last year he can still get to the quarterback and play a lot of snaps.

Terrell Suggs

Age: 37.

2019 team: Arizona and Kansas City.

Statistics: In 244 games (226 starts), Suggs has 139 career sacks, including seven double-digit sack seasons for Baltimore. After 16 years with the Ravens, he signed with Arizona and had 5 1/2 sacks in 13 games before Kansas City acquired him off waivers and he won a Super Bowl ring.

Comment: Suggs (6‑foot‑3, 265 pounds) is the co-biggest name on the board along with Matthews. There’s no question he would be a quick study and provide leadership and potential production.

Cameron Wake

Age: 38.

2019 team: Tennessee.

Statistics: In 155 games (126 starts), he has 100 1/ 2 sacks, including five double-digit sack seasons for Miami. After a decade with the Dolphins, Wake had 2 1/2 sacks in nine games for Tennessee (195 snaps) and was placed on injured reserve on Nov. 26.

Comment: Just two years ago, Wake played 517 snaps in 14 starts for the Dolphins, so if he’s healthy, he could have something left in the tank as a situational pass rusher.

Brooks Reed

Age: 33.

2019 team: Arizona.

Statistics: In 129 games (86 starts) for Atlanta, Houston and Arizona, Reed has 22 1/2 sacks. His career high is six sacks in 2011 as a rookie for Houston. Last year for the Cardinals, he had one sack in nine games.

Comment: Reed checks the right size box for a Broncos outside linebacker (6‑foot‑3, 254 pounds). He doesn’t have a ton of production so he would be more of a depth play than being expected to start.

Ziggy Ansah

Age: 31.

2019 team: Seattle.

Statistics: A first-round pick by Detroit in 2013 (fifth overall), Ansah has 50 1/2 sacks in 91 regular-season games. Last year with Seattle, he had 2 1/2 sacks in 11 games (338 snaps).

Comment: Listed at 6‑foot‑5 and 275 pounds, Ansah’s experience is at defensive end, but the Broncos should explore him about playing a situational edge rusher role.
