War on the virus, not against each other — - today

The holiday season in the USA begins with Thanksgiving. And here too, the holidays could further accelerate the spread of the coronavirus. The future US president calls on the people to discipline. And Trump? Keeps up the mood against the election result. US President-elect Joe Biden has called on Americans to unite in the fight against the corona pandemic. “I know that the country has grown tired of the fight. We must not forget that we are at war with the virus, not with each other, not with each other,” said Biden on Wednesday in his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware. Biden addressed the Americans with admonishing words this Thursday on the occasion of the Thanksgiving holiday. Families and friends usually come together for big celebrations on Thanksgiving. Biden again urged the Americans to refrain from doing so because of the corona risk. In light of the “dramatic increase” in new infections, Biden called for efforts to “double up” to contain the pandemic. “We have months ahead of us in this fight,” said Biden. At the same time, he tried to spread confidence. “If you look back on our history, you can see that the soul of our nation was forged under the most difficult of circumstances.”

Biden warned that the number of new infections detected from the current 160,000 per day will soon rise to 200,000 and could overload the healthcare system in some places. Every American has to make his contribution, for example by wearing masks, observing distance rules and avoiding crowds. In the country of around 330 million inhabitants, around 12.7 million infections have been detected since the beginning of the pandemic and more than 261,000 deaths related to an infection have been reported. The day before Thanksgiving, Johns Hopkins University counted over 2,400 Covid-19 deaths within 24 hours. The numbers last looked worse at the end of June.

Trump: “United before God celebrate” Corona experts appalled by Thanksgiving plans

On January 20th, Biden is to be sworn in as the new president. In his address, he indirectly criticized incumbent Donald Trump for refusing to recognize the election result. “Our democracy was put to the test this year,” said Biden. “In America we have full and fair and free elections. And then we accept the results.” Trump, meanwhile, stuck to his baseless statement that he had won the presidential election. “The election was lost by the Democrats. They cheated,” Trump said at a meeting of Republican senators in the US state of Pennsylvania. “We have to turn the election.” According to US media reports, Trump was originally supposed to be personally in Gettysburg. Eventually, however, he was hooked up to his lawyer Jenna Ellis, who held her smartphone to a microphone to amplify Trump’s voice. The president presents himself as a victim of massive electoral fraud, although he has never been able to produce any evidence and his lawyers have failed with more than 30 lawsuits in court. “All we need is a judge who really listens to us,” complained Trump. Regardless, the transition process officially began before the change in power in the White House.
