Use of violence and bribery — observers report election fraud in Russia

Regional elections are taking place in Russia, overshadowed by the poison attack on Kremlin critic Navalny and the Corona crisis. They are considered an important test of mood for President Putin. Observers now report numerous manipulations during the three-day ballot. The allegations are serious. According to observers, there have been irregularities in the election of new governors and regional parliaments in Russia. More than 1000 reports of possible violations have already been received, said the co-chairman of the independent election observation group Golos, Grigory Melkonjanz, the radio station Echo Moskwy in Moscow. “This includes cases of deliberate election fraud.” In the regions of the country, millions of people were called to vote. Election observers have reported obstacles to their work, said Melkonjants. Violence was also used. “There have been reports of forced voting and bribery from many regions.” Some polling stations were already open on Friday. According to their own statements, the authorities wanted to reduce the risk of infection with the corona virus. To protect against the corona virus, voters and election workers had to wear masks, and a fever was measured.

Critics feared manipulation because it would be difficult to control the election over three days. In addition, some polling stations were set up outdoors. The head of the Central Election Commission, Ella Pamfilova, rejected criticism. “For some people it is more practical to sit down at a street stall, that’s their right.” Regarding the opposition’s allegation that the multi-day polling allowed the authorities to organize election fraud, Pamfilova said that these allegations were not objective and “mean”. The regional election is considered an important test of mood — also for next year’s parliamentary election. Because of the Corona crisis, unemployment in the largest country in the world has risen massively. Experts spoke of great dissatisfaction in the country. The vote is also under the impression of the poisoning of the oppositionist Alexej Navalny, who has been treated in Berlin for three weeks. His team had called on voters to vote for any candidate except for the Kremlin United Russia party in order to break its power. Meanwhile, the first polling stations closed in eastern Russia. The country has eleven time zones. The election of new governors in 18 regions was particularly important for the Kremlin in Moscow. New councilors and mayors were also elected. In total there were more than 9,000 different elections at different levels.
